South African Destination Wedding + Toni and Greg

One of the most beautiful weddings I have shot for many reasons…

Toni and Greg contacted me a little over a year ago and when I read their inquiry I thought they were one of my friends trying to fool me. Toni explained their choice of venue, as this little known game reserve called Ithala close to a town called Louwsburg in KZN. She said she choose it because they wanted an African feel to their wedding, but it had to be in a Catholic church… Ok – so what is strange about all of this is that my Ouma lived in Louwsburg for 50 years, my dad and them grew up there as did I. I love Louwsburg and Ithala for the fact that I’ve been visiting there ever since I can remember, but it was also Leah and my wedding location.

The area has very special meaning to me and I was super excited when the inquiry turned out to be legit… I was super excited to go back as it had been 5 years since my last visit there – when Leah and I got married. Louwsburg is in the middle of nowhere you see, so not many people know about this magical little piece of earth.

It was a typical Louwsburg weather day with mist and rain and wind and sun all coming and going as it pleased. Their little church set up against a little hill next to the local village. Perfect. The reception was down at Ntshondwe camp – Ithala’s main camp surrounded by beautiful koppies and magical views.

I feel such honour to have been a part of their wedding. As I was thinking on my feet to get wicked photos in the 15 minutes we had of sun with no downpour – I was smiling deep inside thinking back to the days of me as a little boy running around those hills and swimming in those rivers.

Toni and Greg – you had a beautiful wedding and I can only hope that your adventure and encounter with Louwsburg and Itala will bring you as many wonderful memories as I have managed to capture there over the years.

I had only spent short of an hour with Christie and Lyle but felt instant chemistry between the both of them. It was as if I wasn’t even there.

The smile and the laughter that would come to Lyle’s voice every time he would hug Christie. The way that Christie had to stand on her toes to kiss Lyle. They complemented each other in so many ways.

Christie and Lyle, I cannot wait to shoot your beautiful June wedding!

March 24th, 2012 I spent with Jimi and Carl at De Hoop Nature Reserve in South Africa.

Their wedding had it all… Breathtaking setting, drama due to weather, last minute hustling to get things in place, fire, love, friends, family, an ostrich, a beautiful tent and the funniest father of the bride speech – all under an African sky.
